Look Mom, I’m in Time Magazine

Woke up this morning, and as I sometimes do went to check out my Statcounter website stats which tell me where all my website visitors are coming from. To my surprise I discovered I’ve been receiving visitor traffic from of all places, Time.com.

Now, to tell you the truth Time magazine is one of the last places I expected to receive a mention from, or an incoming link. After all receiving recognition from Time.com, which is owned by CNN, one of the largest news sources is a pretty lofty goal, even for me.

I began to wonder how this was possible and started getting just a little excited about the potential of getting some good press. On closer examination I discovered…

time magazine online

I am being displayed as a related blog source connected to one of the articles on the Time website. This was beginning to plaster a big smile on my face. It looks like they picked up my RSS feed and are linking to my site from a cool blog aggregation tool called Sphere.

I don’t remember signing up specifically for the Sphere service, so I went there to check it out. Looks like Sphere is a widget that you can add to your site that finds blog posts and news articles directly related to the content of your site.

Sphere boasts of having over 1 billion content pages on the most popular websites like, the New York Times, Aol News, Publishing 2.0, ZDNet, Access Hollywood, duct Tape Marketing and of course Time, plus many more.

I hadn’t at the time installed the Sphere widget so I quickly went to the download page to find out more. Turns out the widget is an easy install for Wordpress blogs. Just upload it to your plugins directory and activate it from your plugins control panel.

The great thing about this widget is users claim it can make the kind of publicity I just received, happen more frequently through the Sphere network.

This plugin is great for my blog readers because it displays information directly related to the post they’re reading. Not to mention if it helps my posts become seen on some high trafficked sites, I’m all for it.

Here’s a link to the Sphere site and here’s a link to the Wordpress plugin for Sphere.

Just wait till my Mom sees me on Time.com!

This sounds real good. Im wondering if I should tailor my blog posts after the postings of popular articles to possible get a link back. Have you tried this Matt?

    Hi Franko,

I haven’t tried to model my blog posts after a specific article.

You would probably be better off, installing the Sphere widget, then using popular keywords in your blog post headings. Using a strong keyword or keyword phrase will help your blog get picked up and referred to from relevant blog postings.

  6. Hi Matt – it’s fun seeing this happen for a number of blogs. Our goal is to create a great user experience and to connect mainstream internet readers to conversational media. Progressive partner sites like TIME are excellent for helping to make that happen.

I really appreciate you having posted your thoughts – really nice of you to do so. Here is my post – http://sphere.wordpress.com/2007/05/12/look-mom-the-sphere-is-connected/
